Handwriting

Although keyboarding is the tool of choice, handwriting is still essential.  Some children with small motor or spatial challenges take more time to learn to form letters.  Dr. Wahl teaches letters according to motor pattern.  For example, the letters c, a, g, and d are taught in sequence because they all “start” the same way both in manuscript and cursive. Large patterns that gradually get smaller are used for practice. It is absolutely critical that manuscript patterns be established in kindergarten and first grade when habits are forming.  Cursive patterns must begin early enough to allow sufficient practice before children are required to use it. Dr. Wahl’s favorite manuscript and cursive materials are:
